Types of Collisions

From dangerous road conditions to distracted drivers, risks are at every turn when on the road.

That is why staying alert and aware while driving is integral to keeping yourself and other

drivers safe. However, if you are involved in an accident, knowing common traffic collisions can

help you better understand what your insurance company, mechanic, or Community Collision

technician is referring to when discussing your vehicle repairs. Below is a list of common

collisions.

Side-impact Collisions

These types of collisions, often called T-bone collisions, are particularly hazardous. They occur

when one vehicle strikes the side of another, forming a 'T' shape on an accident report. Side

impacts can lead to minor to extensive damage, depending on the force and speed of the at-fault

vehicle. Repairs for this type of collision can range from side window replacement to door and

panel replacement. Moreover, structural damage to the frame or chassis is possible and can

render the vehicle unsafe to drive.

Head-on/Front-end Collisions

Two cars colliding head-on usually results in significant damage to both vehicles. Most of the

time, insurance companies will declare both cars totaled rather than salvageable to undergo

repair. Damage from this type of collision usually includes busted windshields and dented

bumpers, along with internal issues to structural components such as the transmission, engine,

steering, and overall body of the car. In severe head-on impacts, it is common to see a vehicle's

structure and frame pushed from front to back, leading to major damage to most, if not all,

components under the hood. Additionally, the driveshaft and axles are at risk and are costly to

repair or replace.

Rear-end traffic Collisions

Rear-end collisions, the most prevalent type of traffic collision, can vary in severity. According

to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), they account for

approximately 23 percent of all motor vehicle crashes. This type of collision can impact more

than just your car's appearance and value; it can also affect the functionality of your vehicle,

potentially making it unsafe to drive. It's not uncommon to encounter wheel alignment issues,

suspension problems with your vehicle's struts and shocks, and engine damage if your car is

struck from the back.
