Procedures After a Car Accident

When you’re in a car accident, dealing with auto insurance can be an enormous stress. Take time to

take care of your physical and mental health and know that you can always reach out to us at

Community Collision for assistance. Despite the confusion that often follows an accident, there are

procedures that need to be followed to help ensure that you get reimbursement from your

insurance company for damages to your car or any hospital bills for injuries resulting from the

accident. If you are injured, seek medical help immediately.

1. Right after an accident, move your car to a safe location and don’t leave the scene. Call police

immediately and check to see if the other driver or passengers are injured. Even if no one is

hurt, it’s important to make sure you report the accident to the police. Take photos of the

scene, including the other driver’s license plate. Make sure you exchange insurance and contact

information with the other driver.

2. If you were at fault, reach out to your insurance company to discuss next steps. Texas is a

comparative fault state, which means each driver must take financial responsibility for any

accident in which they are more than 50% at fault. If you’re unsure how fault is assigned in a car

accident, check out this useful article.

3. File a claim with your insurance company. Make sure you’ve collected your policy number, the

date, time and location of the accident, a detailed description of how the accident happened,

the insurance and contact information of the other party involved, the name of the police

department that responded and the police report number. Once you have this information in

one place, you can start the process of filing a claim. If you feel overwhelmed, take a few deep

breaths, and remind yourself that you’re not alone in this process.

4. Give us a call at 281-837-3260 and drive your car (or work with us to have it towed) to
